Airport: only change a small amount for the first day. Rate isn't great.

In the city, gold shops and exchange counters usually give a better rate than the airport.

Crisp $100 notes get a better rate than small bills. Old or marked notes may get refused.

Ho chi minh exchange rate this summer was roughly 26,000 to 26,500 VND per USD. Check an app on the day.

ATMs work fine but most local ATMs add their own fee on top of your bank's.

Also, cash over $5,000 (or over 15 million VND) has to be declared at customs. Bringing it is allowed, you just declare.
