Short version: felt safe the whole time, including evenings.

The real risk is phone snatching from motorbikes. Don't stand on the curb scrolling your phone.

Carry your bag on the side away from the road. Cross body is better.

Check the plate before getting in a Grab.

So for anyone asking is ho chi minh safe for solo female travellers, my answer is yes, with normal big-city sense.
